Stories, thoughts and reflections on the Bible from the WSFC Staff.

Hello Friends,

There are a few iconic lines from favorite movies that make a big impact.  One of those lines is spoken, barked actually, in a military courtroom by hard-bitten Marine Colonel, Nathan Jessup, in “A Few Good Men” when he answers the lawyer’s demand for the truth.   “The truth?!!!  You can’t handle the truth!!!”

Can you handle the truth of the world in which you wake up each day?

This month, July 2016, is presenting the world with an overwhelming dose of strange reality.  From nearly a dozen horrid episodes of terrifying, intentional acts of mass murder in places flung far around the world by people who think they do God service, to racial and immigration strife, to the beginnings of European division, to the circus of political conventions in the USA, we seem to be teetering on the brink of twilight-zone reality.  Strange, but true, and all in the space of a few weeks.  How are you balancing the truth of all these events?

Jesus said, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.”  (John 8:32).  The Roman governor, Pontius Pilate, looking straight into Jesus own face, was so tangled in his own conflicts and indecision, that he could only ask, “What is truth?”

Jesus simplifies all of the world’s complexity by his answer to the disciples’ question, “…how can we know the way?”  He said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:5,6)  That’s the Truth.  He is the Truth.

In the context of all the unsettled global garbage of the world you’re living in right now, how are you handling the truth?   The truth that matters?  A perfect synonym for “handle” in this context are the words “carry, or deliver”.  As a believer and follower of Jesus Christ, you’ve already handled the truth by hearing it, processing it, and believing it.  You gain peace and freedom in daily living by obeying the truth of Jesus’ words.

So now, in the pathways of your personal experiences and relationships, how are you carrying Jesus, the Truth?  How are you handling the new life He pours into you?  There is no peace and no victory to be gained in the raging sea of human strife, certainly not in the month of July 2016.  But how you handle the Truth, how you receive from Him and carry and deliver His life into the places you go, and the people you meet, makes all difference in the freedom of your soul.  Handle it well.  “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.”  The Truth is a person.  Jesus is His name.

Grace, mercy, and peace to you.
