“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.” Zechariah 4:10
As I am writing this, I have just returned from a visit with my 17 day-old baby niece. She slept the whole time snuggled up in my arms and I just kept taking in all of her smallness, like her little nose and ears, fingers and toes. She is brand new and the epitome of cuddly, soft and sweet.
For one tiny moment while I held this tiny person, I was struck with what small beginnings our lives come from. We enter the world incredibly helpless as we rely on a bigger person to feed us, keep us warm, comfort us and take us to where we need to go. Such humble beginnings.
When I stop to consider God’s ways, he does really big things with very little. Just think about it: God sent his son in the form of a little baby to grow up in a very ordinary way to save humankind in a very extraordinary way.
We can often get discouraged at the thought of small beginnings. We get big ideas and dreams in our minds and hearts and sometimes when it feels like those dreams are dawdling, we want to rush right through the beginning to live out the greatness we just know they contain! I wonder if we don’t miss out on many of God’s gifts along the way when we are inclined to want to fast forward to the end. There are valuable and important attributes like perseverance and grace, knowledge and wisdom that are formed in our beginning experiences. We learn to trust in God’s plan and timing as we rely on Him as our guide from the get-go.
If you are in a season of small beginnings, do not despise the days of starting out. Slow down and enjoy the beauty of your journey now and in the days to come. Be encouraged that all great things start from something small.
