How is it with your soul?
If you remember back a ways, I mentioned that I would be asking you that question over a series of four months.
Back in August I presented a series called “Soul Detox.” One of the teachings was out of the Book of Haggai. In the New Living Translation of the Book of Haggai, we discovered four accurate dates: August 29, September 21, October 17 and December 18. I felt a leading of the Lord that weekend to issue a Four Month Soul Challenge in which we “give careful thought to our ways” and “commit ourselves to the rebuilding of our souls.”
My pledge to you was that I was going to check in on those specific dates. You should be receiving, and hopefully reading, this particular email in or around the final date: December 17th.
So…how is it with your SOUL?
I think this is an important question to be asking right about now. You know, during the craziness of the Christmas season! You may be saying, “Hey, it’s the most wonderful time of the year! Joy to the World, and all.”
But, you and I know better. We know that Christmas can often become the most “joy-less” time of the year. It can be hurried, depressing, and emotionally draining on one’s…wait for it…soul.
This last weekend we continued our commemoration of Advent in lighting what’s known as the “Joy Candle.” Is that candle currently and consistently lit within your soul? Or has the flame died down? Are you lacking joy? Has your soul become tired, hurried or drained?
If so, then I encourage you to read this portion of the Christmas story and allow the wick to re-emerge, the fire of joy to be rekindled, and the warmth of the flame to be felt in your soul.
There were sheepherders camping in the neighborhood. They had set night watchers over their sheep. Suddenly, God’s angel stood among them and God’s glory blazed around them. They were terrified. The angel said, “Don’t be afraid. I’m here to announce a great and joyful event that is meant for everybody, worldwide: A Savior has just been born in David’s town, a Savior who is Messiah and Master. This is what you’re to look for: a baby wrapped in a blanket and lying in a manger.” At once the angel was joined by a huge angelic choir singing God’s praise: “Glory to God in the heavenly heights, Peace to all men and women on earth who please him. Luke 2:8-13
How is your soul now? Maybe you need to read it again. Close the door. Put down the gifts and wrapping paper. Shut down your phone or laptop. Quiet your heart. Breathe deeply. Listen closely to both the Lord and to the echoes of your soul.
Now…may JOY light up your life and fill your soul.
