Hello Friends: 11.1.12- Thankful

Hello Friends,

What are you grateful for today?

Be thinking about this question while I share a quick story with you. Actually, I will tell it quick, but it was anything BUT quick. It took forever.

I left Salem at 5:30 pm in order to get to the Portland Airport yesterday at 6:30 pm for a 7:30 pm flight to San Diego. We didn’t board the plane until 7:30 pm. We didn’t take off until 8:15 pm. While in the air we were told that we would not be landing in San Diego due to foggy weather, but would instead land at LAX. Indeed we did land there at 10:30 pm. I then stood in a long line with hundreds of people needed to get to San Diego as we boarded charter buses and began a 2 hour road trip south. After arriving at the San Diego airport at around 1:15 am I then had to grab a cab and go about a 1/2 hour to my hotel. I checked in around 2:00 am and finally fell asleep at 3:00 am only to get up at 6:30 am for a round of meetings.

Ah, travel:  a life of Planes, Trains and Automobiles!

Remember the question I asked above?

What are you grateful for today?

While I was on the bus from LA to San Diego a really fun, yet crazy thing happened to me. It wasn’t that the sleeping gal sitting next to me kept bobbing her head and bumping my shoulder (which was funny to watch). Rather, I found myself unable to wipe a genuine smile off my face for nearly 45 minutes straight! I was literally overwhelmed with a sense of gratitude and joy that I couldn’t shake for a long period of time. Even as I write this today (after only 3 hours of sleep), I am still consumed with gratitude.

I got to thinking on that bus ride about how great my life is. Rather than getting frustrated at the circumstances (as many people were on this trip), I keep thinking about all ways God has blessed me. Now, that’s not to say that I didn’t have moments of fatigue and frustration (I have those often), but there was a significant difference about this time on the bus. I made a distinct effort to remind myself of all of God’s blessings and I had a spirit of gratitude sweep over me. It was amazing.

I won’t recount all the wonderful things that came to my mind, because it would take too long and they are very specific to my context. But, suffice it to say, I am so grateful.

I love God. I love my wife. I love my family. I love my church. I love my life.

What are you grateful for today?

Your situation may be a mess. If so, what are you gonna do about it? Are you gonna complain, moan and project your distain upon others? Or are you gonna choose gratitude? There has to be SOMETHING you are thankful for!  Even if it’s one, simple, small thing…thank God for it and watch how your countenance changes.

“Be joyful always. Pray continually. Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”  1 Thessalonians 5:18
