Guarding God’s Truth

I love the reminder Paul gives us in 2 Timothy 1:13-14, to guard the precious truths of the Gospel that have been entrusted to us:  “Hold on to the pattern of wholesome teaching you learned from me—a pattern shaped by the faith and love that you have in Christ Jesus.  Through the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within us, carefully guard the precious truth that has been entrusted to you.”

Yesterday I had to stop by one of those big box hardware stores in order to get a couple of house keys made.   My middle school boys have decided they need their own house key and so we decided to oblige them.  After the keys were cut out in their specific pattern and the sales clerk handed them over to me in the little brown bag, I took a stroll down the home security aisle.  As most of the massive aisles in those big box home improvement stores tend to make me feel, I became a bit overwhelmed at all the options available.  We’re talking everything from little key sliders that look like “real” rocks, to garage door secret coded lock boxes, to some serious home security systems.  It just shows that many of us will go to great lengths to protect the things most valuable to us: our homes, the treasures inside of them and the loved ones who live there.

If only we would be so diligent about guarding God’s truth in our lives!  The enemy would love for us to follow the pattern of this world that is often filled with fear, chaos and confusion.  However, when we daily hold on to the pattern of wholesome teaching found in the Word and depend fully on the Holy Spirit in our lives, we can rest assured that we’re moving into a pattern of faith and love that is based on the truth of God’s word.  What are you doing to actively guard the Truth in your life?

In Christ,
