Donuts and Devos
HELLO FRIENDS,
My name is Joshua Fehlen, and I am on staff at WSFC as the Creative Arts Director. I have a wife named Shannon, a one-year-old named Taya and another baby on the way! Today, I am deciding to reflect and write about something that has really impacted me as a Father today and Follower of Jesus growing up.
Every week growing up, my parents would take us (my siblings and I) to our local grocery store for a family tradition called “Donut Saturday”. I put that in quotes because we held that name very loosely. This event, more than half the time, would land on a different day of the week depending on our schedules, or more likely our donut cravings.
These “Donut Saturdays” were a special time where the whole family would be together to eat, laugh, and spend time in the Word of God. As a kid the donuts were the primary focus and motivation, but as I got older I realized that the donuts were only a bonus to the way my faith and character were being built in these special moments.
Taking time out of your week to spend with family or friends centered around the Bible can be a life-changer and a faith-builder. Use the Donut as the spark to your motivation and let the Word of God work in and through you. It’s not too late to start a family tradition or start a personal discipline of reading the Bible.
WSFC’s PAUSE Reading Plan is a great place to start! There is an Old Testament passage and a New Testament Passage to read everyday. If you are a little too motivated by the donut and not the Bible, you can choose to just read the New Testament passage instead so your heart and stomach can both be fed!
I am so excited to start this tradition with my young kids soon! And I hope you feel encouraged to do the same with your family or friends! Set up that group chat and organize a date and time to eat donuts and do your devotionals together!
…. “Donuts & Devos” has a good ring to it.
